A convivial and dependable anchor for its community, Izzy’s welcomes all into its legacy - inviting loyal guests and new folks to dine with its history every day.
Here, stories are created and memories relived.
MORE ABOUT IZZY GOMEZ
Isadore "Izzy" Gomez was a Portuguese immigrant, chef and restaurateur San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood.
Gomez left his home in Portugal when he was 18 and made his way to San Francisco. According to his obituary, he arrived in the city penniless, and "friends said his unrecorded charities had kept him that way". He landed his first job as a "swamper" in a local gin-joint on the infamous Barbary Coast. He managed to save enough to buy a small bar at 848 Pacific Avenue. During Prohibition, with his Isadore Gomez' Café, he became known as the city's most beloved violator of the Volstead Act. In 1933, he served a 30-day jail term for bootlegging. Ten years later, in February 1943, Gomez received a presidential pardon. He was recognized by LIFE magazine as one of San Francisco's more colorful characters.
One of Gomez's great fans was the Armenian-American writer William Saroyan. His famous play The Time of Your Life is about Gomez and is set at Izzy's saloon. Saroyan wrote in his journals that Gomez's place was downtown, "not far from the old Montgomery block, across from the firehouse at First and Pacific". He went on to write:

The combination of natural materials and neutral colors feels immediately relaxing and warm—it's the kind of place you want to settle into the cozy, tan, leather banquettes with a drink in hand and stay all night. Costantini collaborated with Four Seasons and EDG Design on the award winning restaurant, Elena in the Four Seasons Buenos Aires.
Our work comprised custom seating, tables, casegoods, and lighting made from wood, bronze, cast iron, leather, spun aluminum, acrylic and gold embossing.
Read about Elena profiled in the Michelin Guide here (excerpt below):
If we were to rank the best Argentinian hotel restaurants, Elena, occupying the luxury Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires, would definitely figure high up on the list! Aesthetically inspired by the interior of old houses in the San Telmo district famous for its tango venues, it features a private dining room in the wine cellar and a main dining space brightened by a large glass dome, with an open kitchen to one side (note the ageing cabinets full of different cuts of meat). The culinary concept here, in what we would describe as a contemporary steakhouse, is traditional with meat (Angus sirloin, 45-day-aged Angus T-Bone, Argentinian wagyu ribeye etc) cooked on the Josper grill, but you can also order delicious ham and cheeseboards, catches of the day with different garnishes, as well as the occasional pasta dish.
Costantini collaborated with WAI on the public spaces, rooms and suites of this 5 star property in the posh Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires.
Items comprised lighting, tables, seating, casegoods, mirrors, and more in wood, glass, bronze, acrylic, leather, steel, fiberglass, and more.
The leather-wrapped minibars and matching nightstands featured over 3000 custom cast, polished aluminum pulls in the shape of horse-bits.
Costantini’s Bruno Chairs and Stools were specified for the Parry Group’s William and Henry Steakhouse in Lynchburg, Virgina featuring a contrasting hair hide back with leather seats.
The gourmet grill at Nuestro Secreto, located in a greenhouse-like custom structure in the famed Buenos Aires Four Seasons, was selected as one of the eight most beautiful glass restaurants in the world by Architectural Digest. In addition to one of the best barbecues, you can enjoy this “secret” surrounded by the gardens and the hotel Mansion. It is run by the talented Patricia Ramos, the only female Chef of a gourmet grill in the country.
Costantini was hired to make custom seating, tables and lighting from wood, leather, iron, glass, upholstery and more.

Read the feature in Architectural Digest here (excerpt below):
Tag-team AD100 firms McAlpine Tankersley Architecture and McAlpine Booth & Ferrier Interiors have brought the rustic, lavender-infused appeal of Provence, France, to Texas bluebonnet country. For Austin’s new restaurant and wine bar LaV—pronounced *la vie—*they created a brick building modeled after a 1920s warehouse and added a pewter bar and well-stocked wine racks. “The architecture is masculine,” designer Susan Ferrier notes, “but the interiors have a feminine feel,” which in this case means tufted banquettes, handblown-glass lamps, and paintings of the lush French countryside. Chef Allison Jenkins highlights the simple sophistication of Provençal cuisine, serving up such dishes as grilled daurade with fennel confit, olives, and preserved lemon.
