Aquarius: a Modern sculptural fabric floor lamp from Mirei Monticelli - In Stock.
Measurements are 16" L x 12" W x 67" H (40cm x 30cm x 170cm H) as shown.
This newest work from award winning Mirei Monticelli debuted at ICFF in May of 2022.
From the artist:
"As the sun sets, the sky turns a deep rich purple, and the Milky Way sparkles in the depths of space, Aquarius soars majestically through the sky. She loves the feeling of the wind on her skin and the way the moon makes her hair shimmer. Aquarius - the water Bearer, is embodied in this cascading floor lamp and is expressed in the sinuous curves of the special textile made from Banaca fabric.
The vastness of the universe has always amazed me. For as long as humans have walked on Earth, we’ve always looked to something greater than us for clarity and strength. Looking to the heavens, the planets and stars has always served us to satiate our curiosity and desire to understand.
I created the Aquarius lamp during a time of great anxiety and uncertainty, and found myself at peace with a lamp resembling the flowing water that the Aquarius bears."
About Studio Mirei
Mirei is a Milan-based multidisciplinary designer who started her career in her birth place, the Philippines. Working from her roots has exposed her to the world of traditional manufacturing and production of furniture, where everything is made by hand. This environment exposed her to the beautiful world of artisan crafts, but then gave her the yearning to explore state-of-the-art techniques that come from the western world – which led her to study at Politecnico di Milano with a Masters degree in Design and Engineering in 2017. In 2019, she founded Studiomirei. On the same year, she won the Salone Satellite special mention award for the Nebula lamp during the Salone del Mobile.
Studio Mirei is deeply rooted in creating conscious and sustainable designs while working indiscriminately with industrial processes and small artisans. We evaluate the best processes and materials for each piece that goes into an item depending on its quality, novelty and environmental footprint. We work within an intersection of sustainable materials, craft, technology and empowering communities.
Currently, the studio mainly works with lighting products made of Banaca fiber, cultivated from the Philippines and woven by a community of weavers found in the province of Bicol. The proceeds of the products go into livelihood development programs for the weavers and their families.
